About Corli Slabbert

I have always gravitated toward the South African Landscape and Seascapes because I find them so expressive. Living in South Africa, there is no way that you can not be influenced by it.

Through my work, I convey more than just a beautiful seascape. My work evokes an atmospheric quality.

The viewer must feel like they can step into the painting and go on a journey of exploration. Wanting the viewer to experience and connect their own emotion when looking at the work.

The sea becomes both subject and metaphor: a place where memory, feeling, and unspoken experiences seem to linger beneath the surface. Calm and light-filled or stormy and restless, its shifting moods

can mirror our own before we can name what we feel.

Through layered glazes, subtle tonal shifts, and changing movement across the surface, the paintings move beyond the depiction of a seascape. They invite a quieter encounter—an opportunity to pause, reflect, and recognise something of our own emotional landscape within the water.

Between Shore and Word considers the space between what we experience and what we are able to express—the feeling that exists before language.
